No matter how you say it, the fact is Louisville is a great place to live. If you don’t believe it, consider the following:

In its 1999 survey of "Entrepreneurial Hot Spots," Inc. magazine ranked Louisville 12th-best large city in the U.S. for starting and growing a company. Entrepreneur magazine recently dubbed Louisville among 25 "Hot Cities" for starting a business and put it third on its list of mid-size cities ripe for entrepreneurship.

That’s not all. Places Rated Almanac recognized Louisville as the 14th best place to live in North America in 1999.

What these prominent publications have found, is something Louisvillians have known all along. Louisville has a charm and energy that is unique and inspiring.

Business is Booming

Home to United Parcel Service’s main U.S. air hub, Louisville has long been known as a transportation and distribution center. Today, the city is also earning a reputation for its technology and medical-related businesses. Fortune 500 companies such as Tricon Global Restaurants, Humana Inc., LG&E Energy Co., and Brown-Forman Corp. call Louisville home. In addition, Ford Motor Co. and General Electric have large manufacturing operations here.

Horses are Running

Perhaps Louisville’s biggest claim to fame is the Kentucky Derby hosted every year at historic Churchill Downs. The highly acclaimed two-minute race draws the attention of millions worldwide, and the pageantry leading up to the glorious event is spectacular.

Add to that world-renowned arts, museums for science and baseball, a park system designed by noted landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and the result is a community steeped in tradition and beauty.

People are Working

Statistics show that the Greater Louisville area has reached the one million mark in population. The area gained 97,000 net new jobs between 1990 and 1998. The unemployment rate has remained low and the economy is poised for future growth.

History is Calling

Founded in 1778 by Gen. George Rogers Clark, Louisville was later named in honor of King Louis XVI of France — a strong proponent of the American Revolution. Because of its strategic location on the Ohio River, the city soon became a transportation Mecca.

After the Civil War, Louisville evolved into a manufacturing stronghold. Like many cities, Louisville has worked to diversify its economic base with an emphasis on services. Today, the city is well positioned with growing transportation, distribution, health care and technology sectors.

No doubt, Louisville is a special place full of opportunities and unique experiences. It doesn’t matter how you say it, just know Louisville is a great place to call home.
